Sudip Roy’s Time Past is Present

In myriad ways, Sudip Roy’s Time Past is Present straddles mediums, moods and materials. The vast range of techniques and the idea of perception worked on perfecting his representation of figures and faces, makes this show by Sudip Roy one to savour long after. The show includes washes, watercolours, sketches, charcoals, oils, semi- abstracts and abstracts. If his oils heighten the intensity of his paintings-his watercolours stretch the perspective, creating faces into the foreground and pushing other figures far behind. His exaggerated the sense of depth with oblique lines, formed by the edge of a colour the front of a stroke, gives us vignettes of vitality He makes very effective use of white, which empties space, and shadows too, because it surges forwards.

Sudip Roy’s washes bring back the moody colour planes and expression of the old Chugtai and Bengal School Masters. In his abstract works beauty is no longer hinted at and incidental, as it may in some details of pre- classical primitive art, but informs every detail in a classical work of art, this is why it seems spontaneously self- evident.

Sudip Roy’s work is a sum of experiences and inspirations, an even more provocative sum of constructions, for it shows that, in the end, everything is valued and felt and emoted and the humane beauty that came into existence with classical art matters because it began the very epoch of man’s tryst with the human body. Some of the paintings here make explicit the beauty implicit in the human body, showing that its form was inherently beautiful suggesting that it was ideal despite itself. Beauty in art with the figurative studies promises transcendence of the flesh even as it needed the body to be fleshed out- needed to be embodied- to be taken seriously: to be more than an abstract mirage, Platonically perfect and humanly embodied.
