Edward Gorey by Richard Avedon (Richard Avedon Foundation)

Yesterday I came across a stunning expressive portrait of Edward Gorey taken by the brilliant Richard Avedon. This black and white study is at once austere and full of a deep sense of calm as well as a rare melancholy that is born of meditation. It has Gorey's cat nestled around his neck like a warm furry muffler. The cat is comfortable seated in reverie curled around her master's nack happy to have a place to sink into langour as it were.

This image defines the sensitivity and the serenity that Avedon often searched for after his frenzied adveritizing activity at Vogue. The beauty of the moment, an inchoate, silent solitary fragment brings into the realms of subject as well as the hand behind the shutter.

We also glimpse Avedon's Avedon’s  charisma and curiosity which made him adept at coaxing the most revealing aspects of his subjects’ personalities and translating them to film. The result was a series of stunning and rare portraits that sometimes had a surreal edge. Avedon worked out his internal battles in the studio, confronting his fears through the act of pressing the shutter. What he revealed was the humanity of his subjects, no matter how private or high-profile.In this image Gorey looks like a sombre Greek character out of the pages of a Greek drama full of a resonant rhythm that extols the past and the present through his hair and his lustrous beard.

Some of the most iconic portraits of the 20th and 21st centuries were taken by photographer Richard Avedon. This image affirms the truth that a photographer of portraits must be a reader of faces before he captures them.

Avedon was an expert at capturing larger-than-life personalities. Without the distraction of props or set pieces, his photographs focused on revealing humanity at its core.

While Avedon passed away in 2004, his work lives on thanks in part to his foundation’s active Instagram account. While most of the subjects, have since passed away, many look like they could have been taken yesterday.
