The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council that met in Srinagar has declared tax slabs and cesses for more than 1,000 items, and among them is art — a category that till now was exempted from VAT in some states, including West Bengal. In Rajasthan, the tax was much lower. The tax reform has listed it under the tax bracket of 12 per cent, including, among others, “paintings, drawings and pastels”, “original engravings, prints and lithographs”, “original sculptures and statuary in any material”…
Aakriti Art Gallery had started the GenNext series of exhibitions to focus on young artists, who, it thought, showed promise. Most of the participants of this particular show were born in the 1980s, with one of them, Nihaal Faizal, born as late as in the 1990s. Welcome to India's first monthly art magazine, The Wall !
The Wall was conceptualised to get art news to readers. In India, most of the art magazines come out once every 3-4 months, so a show in the summer is reviewed in the winter. How could we expect the art world to grow when there was no news at all.
We went through the magazines and realised that instead of encouraging people to embrace art in their lives, most of the magazines were intimidating and more like art school magazines rather than consumer or collector oriented.
The Wall decided to change all that with our editorial strategy, we write simple articles written by some of the most knowledgeable, independent and important people in the art world. We are free, frank and fearless. We also do not shy away from doing stories which expose manipulation in pricing, dichotomy of galleries who say buy art for the love of art but actually are transactional in nature, just waiting to close that sale. And then there are artists, who swear that they don't like auctions or discussing prices but are so focussed on money that the art they produce is without any soul.
We are your guide through the art world and your trusted advisor.
We also bring you live shows on The Wall Art TV, so wherever we have a good show opening, we are there with our video team.Sitting in your home in New York, you can watch the latest show opening.
The Wall is about celebrating the finer things in life, so do read our restaurant and hotel reviews, places to go and great books to read.
Just be on The Wall, your gateway to what is happening in the art world and live the fine life !
