The word Essential

I was thinking about the word 'essential' like 'essential commodities. Art does not fall within this category. Yet, can there be a human life without art? So meanings change with context and context too - change. For instance, how often an educated people in urban life pronounce 'I don't understand art' - that is the context at one phase. Born in Calcutta 1941
• Graduated in Painting from Govt. College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, 1963.
• Received French Govt. Scholarship in Printmaking and Painting, studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1966-69.
• Ed.M, State University of New York at Buffalo under AICE-UNESCO Fellowship 1981.
• Traveled extensively in Africa, USA, Western Europe, Turkey and Far East.
• Received all India award in painting, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, 1961.
• Received President’s award in painting, All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society, New Delhi, 1975.
• Worked in Nigeria as the Head of Visual Arts in two Universities, for a period of eleven years, 1976-87.
• Held solo shows of Paintings in major galleries in India.
• Joined many major group shows and Art Camps in India and abroad.
• Represented by Agora Gallery, Chelsea, New York; Art World Gallery, Chennai.
• Founder President of Kolkata Art Trust.
• Area of works: paintings, digital graphics and video-art.
• Published papers on contemporary and folk arts. Forthcoming Book: “Patachitra- folk arts of Bengal”.
