Years ago, as a student of the under-graduate class of painting at Calcutta's Rabindra-Bharati University, Ritendra Roy (b.1972) had painted a 'still life with flowers in a vase on table-top, as an academic must-do, albeit with an unusual variation, in which the cast-shadows of the foliage appeared as weighty and as 'real' as the flowers and foliage in the vase, as well as of somewhat different in character than the matters of which those were shadows. The mode of representation, with emphasis on counter-posing phenomenologically contrasting phenomenon and resolving the contradiction in painterly manner, remain with Ritendra a creative motivation, after all these years. Meanwhile, Ritendra's artistic concerns had undergone sea-changes. His post-graduation art education at Santiniketan, and especially his stay there, did much to turn him to a quintessential landscape painter which he has remained even after re-allocation of himself to Calcutta as a professional painter. Ever since the re-location, he has flourished as a cityscape painter. But what is of singular importance is that he has never degenerated into a descriptive city landscape painter. Ritendra's interest in geometric abstract art, undoubtedly, has been responsible for his straying away from descriptive cityscapes. All geometric entities are human conceived and man-made.
Ritendra's concern with form and composition, at the end of the day, appears secondary to his latent and more potent concern with configuration of images into imagery.
